The Oil and Gas industry must cope with unique challenges.  Capital projects typically have massive funding requirements and the prices of oil and gas products are extremely volatile. Further uncertainty is introduced with the unpredictable nature of the regulatory environment. With this combination, the risks in new construction or exploration initiatives are multiplied.

Turnaround and maintenance projects introduce additional management and information demands because of their fundamental differences from capital programs.  For example, maintenance projects invariably compete with capital programs for resources.  Turnaround projects can be planned and estimated only to a limited level of detail and their costs are notoriously difficult to plan and track – made even more difficult because of the extremely tight time frames and intensity of effort.

The need to manage this risk and complexity, along with the tiered structure of the industry and the interdependence of suppliers, have led to widespread adoption of solid project management practices.  This, in turn, has supported the industry’s reliance on commercial-grade tools.  Scheduling tools such as Oracle Primavera or Deltek Open Plan and estimating tools such as Ares Prism are used universally, and most companies have integrated these tools with additional proprietary systems to meet their unique business needs.
